Life Insurance
Life insurance is a unique way to give to charity.
To qualify, the Alpha Tau Omega Foundation needs to become both
owner and beneficiary; no incidents of ownership can be retained.
If the policy is paid up, your charitable contribution is generally
the replacement value or cost basis of the policy; whichever is
less. Ongoing premiums paid on a gifted life insurance policy also
qualify for charitable deductions.
Charitable Trusts
The charitable trusts provides a unique way to give — offering
substantial tax savings while providing an additional benefit: annual
income to you or your family.
The charitable trust is funded with an asset — appreciated
property or securities are usually best. Within the charitable trust,
the assets can be sold and the proceeds reinvested to produce a
greater yield for the donor(s) or beneficiary(s).
Immediate benefits of a charitable trust include:
- A current income tax deduction
- Bypass of capital gains taxes
- Usually an increase in income
Gift Annuity
With a gift annuity, you and/or someone you designate
receive fixed payments for life at an attractive rate, based on
your age(s). You may also defer the payments until a future date;
this usually provides greater annual income. You get a tax deduction
the year the gift is made, plus tax-free return of principal. Applicable
capital gains tax is deferred is the annuity if funded with appreciated
assets. Part of your gift helps ATO right now!
Wills and/or Bequests
This may be a good option to consider for long-term
savings. The Federal estate tax can still take approximately 50%
of one’s estate at the time of death. That’s a higher
tax bite than income tax! Property bequeathed to non-profit institutions
escapes taxation as part of the estate. Federal estate tax laws
and the laws of many states encourage charitable bequests by allowing
an estate tax deduction for the full value of charitable gifts.
In my cases, tax benefits make possible significant gifts at a
lower total cost. When you name a charity in your will, be sure
to use its full, legally incorporated name (The Alpha Tau Omega
Foundation, Inc.). Your will can be a convenient vehicle for making
a charitable gift of lasting value. If definitely pays to do some
advance planning with your attorney or other professional advisor.
We hope you will consider a charitable bequest to ATO in your will.
