ATO recharters at Ball State

Jan 19, 2011

After a seven-year hiatus, Alpha Tau Omega regained its charter as a member of Ball State’s greek community.

The fraternity celebrated the occasion with a members-only dinner and reception Saturday night.

In 2002, Alpha Tau Omega lost its charter because members could not pay their house dues. Since Fall 2009, the men have been working to pay off their debt.

Recruitment Chairman Colin Warner said meeting the alumni who have been involved with the fraternity over the years was the best aspect of the chartering.

“It was really cool to see how much it meant to them that [the fraternity] was going to be back on campus,” Warner said. “It was really cool talking to a lot of the alumni and to hear their stories.”

Even though Alpha Tau Omega has not been a chartered fraternity until this weekend, the fraternity has not wasted any time when it comes to raising funds.

Matt Shaffer, the fraternity’s president, said Alpha Tau Omega raised $7,900 with Phi Sigma Kappa in January 2010 with their Polar Plunge event.

Six brothers participated in Dance Marathon to benefit the Riley Hospital for Children. Alpha Tau Omega was responsible for 30 percent of the funds raised at that event, Shaffer said.

Next week will be the group’s rush week. They will be having events every night so potential recruit can get to know all of the brothers.

Shaffer said Alpha Tau Omega is looking to meeting the recruits and having them join the fraternity.

“It is a great place for guys to come out and make friends,” he said. “And they can make brothers even more than that.”
