Crossing Points Prom (Alabama 20180905)

On April 17th, 2018, Alpha Tau Omega and Kappa Delta hosted the annual Crossing Points Prom. The night was one filled with dancing, food, and plenty of smiles to go around. The Crossing Points Prom is a very special night for the brothers of Alpha Tau Omega and is an event that has quickly become one of our most cherished traditions. Crossing Points is a collaboration between The University of Alabama’s College of Education and the Tuscaloosa City Schools system. Its mission is to help students with disabilities transition from school to adult life. George Shirley attended UA and was initiated into The Alpha Tau Omega Fraternity in 1944. George later served on The University of Alabama Board of Trustees from 1987 to 1998. George married Betty, who was a Kappa Delta and their grandson, Walt, was born with Down Syndrome. In the early 2000s, Betty Shirley had the idea of hosting a prom for the Crossing Points students in collaboration with Alpha Tau Omega and Kappa Delta. Originally held in the Ferguson Center ballroom, the event now takes place at the Alpha Tau Omega house every spring. The Crossing Points Prom is an important historical event for Beta Delta which allows us to demonstrate our appreciation for alumni like George Shirley, our respect for Betty Shirley and Kappa Delta, and our support for the Tuscaloosa community.
