Brothers from WMU raise nearly $5,000 for Habitat

Feb 25, 2010

Enduring snow and frigid temperatures, members of Western Michigan University’s Alpha Tau Omega fraternity have been living outside to raise money for Kalamazoo Valley Habitat for Humanity.

Some 50 students have been taking turns dwelling in temporary quarters outdoors at the flag poles on campus since Tuesday.

They were to fold their makeshift living arrangements at noon today, hoping to have raised about $5,000 to help build a Habitat home in Kalamazoo this year.

Campus Campout is an annual fundraiser conducted by the fraternity. It started in 2003 to raise money to support the volunteer efforts of fraternity members and other WMU students who work with Habitat.

Organizers say that anyone interested may make donations at the camp-out site, which is near WMU’s Lee Honors College.

Donations may also be made on behalf of the fraternity online at habitatkalamazoo.org. Checks, payable to Kalamazoo Valley Habitat for Humanity with “ATO” in the memo line, may also be sent by mail to 525 E. Kalamazoo Ave., Kalamazoo, MI 49007.
