Chapter Eternal: Glenn T. Chadima, Iowa ’29

Glenn T. Chadima, a lifelong resident of Cedar Rapids, died November 22, 2010 of complications of ALS, surrounded by his loving family. Friends may call at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. Funeral services to be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday at Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories by the Rev. Heather Hayes of First Presbyterian Church. A private family burial with military honors will follow in Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery.

Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Patti; two daughters, Susanne Chadima Chelf of Iowa City and Terry Chadima of Hiawatha; two grandchildren, John Chelf and Megan Chelf, both of Iowa City; a brother, Dr. Warren Chadima and wife, Joan of Cedar Rapids; sister-in-law, Mari Greb and husband, Gene of Iowa City; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and three brothers, James Joseph, Dennis Alan, and George Edward Jr.

Glenn was born August 31, 1929 in Cedar Rapids to George Edward and Gladys Charipar Chadima. He married Patricia Bowman, May 18, 1957 at Danforth Chapel in Iowa City. Glenn graduated from the University of Iowa in 1952 with a BS degree in Business. He was a member of Alpha Tau Omega fraternity. During the Korean Conflict Glenn enlisted in the Army on April 10, 1952 and served until March 22, 1954. Upon discharge from the Army, he joined the family business and became President and general manager of Hubbard Cold Storage Warehouse (a division of Hubbard Ice and Fuel). A member if the International Association of Refrigerated Warehouses, the Hubbard Cold Storage consistently earned the highest ratings given for refrigerated warehouses.

As a youth, Glenn enjoyed speed skating and won the US National Championship in LaCrosse, WI in 1941. The same year he won the Chicago Tribune’s Silver Skates Championship competing against 537 other skaters in his division. In 1981 he was inducted into the Iowa Skating Association’s “Hall of Fame” and for more than 15 years he personally sponsored the Cedar Rapids Annual Silver Skate Championships at the Lou Dennis Rink in Ellis Park.

Glenn was also a prominent golfer and won a number of CRCC Club championships along with playing in many local and state tournaments. His greatest pleasure was playing a round of golf, which he did as often as possible, always walking the coarse. Being a low handicapper, and an excellent coach, many people sought his advice on how to improve their game. Second to golf was his unwavering support of the Hawkeye football and basketball teams. A season ticket holder and generous contributor for over fifty years. He was now looking forward to seeing his grandson, John, play football for the Hawkeyes. Glenn had a great appreciation for the outdoors, nature and animals but his greatest love was for his family whom he cherished most of all.

For over fifty years Glenn has been a member of the Cedar Rapids Country Club. He also is a member of the University of Iowa Alumni Association, I Club, USGA, Alpha Tau Omega Alumni, and First Presbyterian Church.
