Foundation Scholarships

The Alpha Tau Omega Foundation is proud to again make available more than $100,000 in Scholarships to ATOs across the country. If you are interested and qualify, please complete the online application located at www.ato.org. Your application will be reviewed and National Scholarships will be awarded on the following scale: 40% academic achievement, 30% demonstrated leadership in ATO; and 30% demonstrated leadership on campus and in the community.

Requirements for consideration are: Candidate must be an initiated member of ATO in good standing and have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.5 on a 4.0 scale.

National Scholarships

Applications for 2019 scholarships will be available January 1, 2019

Application Deadline for both Undergraduate and Graduate Scholarships will be: April 1, 2019

Graduate Scholarship

Graduate Scholarships are funded by a gift from the Dean Thomas Arkle Clark Memorial Scholarship Fund. A minimum of four Scholarships are available to students either enrolled or accepted into an accredited graduate program. The recipient must be a full-time student during the academic year for which the award is received.

Brigadier General John F. Kinney Scholarship

The scholarship honors the memory of John F. Kinney, Washington State ’33, United States Marine Corps. To qualify for a Scholarship, an individual must be a member of Alpha Tau Omega and a current member of a National Guard or Military Reserve unit, or enrolled in the Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) or similar military training program at their college or university. Further, a Scholarship recipient must have the intention of serving for a period of time on active duty with their Guard or Reserve unit, or in the United States Marine Corps, Air Force, Navy, Army, Coast Guard or successor organization.

William D. Krahling Excellence in Journalism Scholarship

Established to help college journalism students strive for excellence as exemplified by Brother William D. Krahling, Mt. Union ’54, who served as the editor of the ATO Palm, and now serves as the Editor Emeritus for the ATO Palm and National Archivist. The Scholarship will be awarded to a student who is majoring in journalism or a related field, has completed one academic year of undergraduate education and has at least one undergraduate academic year remaining. A letter of recommendation from a member of the journalism faculty is required.

Lawrence A. Long Memorial Law Scholarship

This scholarship honors former Worthy Grand Chief Lawrence A. Long who served as Province Chief, Worthy Grand Keeper of the Annals, High Counselor, Worthy Grand Chief and Worth High Chancellor. This Scholarship is awarded to a student who is enrolled or accepted into an accredited law school and is a full-time student during the academic year for which the award is made.

Richard A. Ports Public Affairs Internship

The Richard A. Ports Public Affairs Internship recognizes the outstanding ATO junior(s) with a demonstrated interest in public affairs/political science. The prestigious award features a summer internship in Washington, D.C. when available. This program honors Richard A. Ports, Mount Union ’50, Chief of Province XII, who was killed in an auto accident while returning home from visiting a chapter. Brother Ports was active in California and National politics prior to his tragic death in 1965.

J. Milton Richardson Theological Fellowship

The Fellowship was established in 1981 to honor J. Milton Richardson who served as ATO’s spiritual advisor for nearly four decades. The Scholarship is awarded to an ATO who plans to attend, or is enrolled in, an accredited graduate school in theology or the seminary with the plans to become a member of the clergy.

Arthur Sailer Memorial Pharmacology Scholarship

The Sailer Pharmacology Scholarship honors Brother Sailer, North Dakota State ’32, by awarding a Scholarship for graduate students majoring in pharmacology. Applicants must be enrolled in an accredited Pharmacology graduate program.

Undergraduate Scholarships

Undergraduate Scholarships are funded through bequests from John W. Ruettinger, the first chairman of the ATO Foundation Fund, N. Wiley Thomas, ATO’s first Northern initiate, and Alexander Macomber who served for thirty-five years as the Worthy Grand Keeper of the Exchequer for the ATO Fraternity. The recipient MUST have at least one undergraduate year remaining before graduation.

Regional Scholarships

Ball State University

Distinct Advantage Scholarship

The Alpha Tau Omega Fraternity at Ball State University offers five scholarships to incoming men attending Ball State University enrolled as a full-time student. Scholarship applicants, and recipients, are not obligated to join Alpha Tau Omega or any other Ball State University Fraternity. Since 1865, Alpha Tau Omega Fraternity has been a provider for amazing lifetime opportunities to collegiate men. Regarded as America’s Leadership Development Fraternity, Alpha Tau Omega provides students the means to do more with their college experience. Through innovative programs, ATO enhances leadership, scholarship, friendship, brotherhood, community service and involvement, social life and more, all with real-life applicable experiences. Founded in 1972, the Alpha Tau Omega Fraternity at Ball State University prides itself in developing college men into leaders both on and off campus. In the words of Founder Otis Allan Glazebrook, “Alpha Tau Omega holds before the young men of the country an ideal and something greater than a mere intellectual ideal. Alpha Tau Omega stands for heart as well as head. It has given men a true ideal of life.”

Baylor

John O’Bryan Seward Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship is dedicated to the memory of Brother Seward, whose life was cut short in a hang gliding accident, and is most remembered for his spirit, generosity, and humor. Recipients shall be selected and recommended to the Foundation by the Baylor ATO Theta Nu Board of Trustees, upon the advice and recommendation of Theta Nu chapter officers.

Central Florida

Kenneth F. Murrah Educational Endowment

Endowment provides funding for educational purposes such as attending LeaderShape, Regional Leadership Conferences, and Congress. Requests for these funds must be made using the Grant Application.

Kenneth F. Murrah Scholarship Program

Scholarship program that was created by Kenneth F. Murrah, Emory ’52, to encourage leadership development. Annual Scholarships are given for recipients to attend LeaderShape, Regional Leadership Conferences and other leadership programs.

Cincinnati

Steven Haisley Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship is dedicated to the memory of Steven Haisley, Cincinnati ‘00. Steven passed August 12, 2006 and will be remembered forever by his brothers. Steve, always laid back and care free, was the consummate ATO Brother. Heavily involved on campus and dedicated to his studies, Steve, was a member of many campus organizations and excelled academically. Despite campus and academic rigors, ATO was his home and his family. He always made time for Delta Lambda. It is certain that Steven was the type of brother our founders envisioned when developing the Alpha Tau Omega Fraternity.

Delaware

Delaware Epsilon Rho (Click here to apply)

The Delaware Epsilon Rho Scholarship was created to promote good citizenship, scholarship and leadership. It was established to provide scholarships to children & step-children of Epsilon Rho members.

Emory

Kenneth F. Murrah Educational Endowment

Florida

Robert Seabrook Baynard Scholarships

The Baynard scholarships were initially established in honor of Robert S. Baynard, AO’24, long-time President of the Alpha Omega Trustees and the House Corporation, and serving also as Alpha Tau Omega Alumni Director for the State of Florida. To Brother Baynard, Alpha Omega Chapter was the vanguard for developing future leaders at the University of Florida. He wanted to make a difference to Alpha Tau Omega Fraternity and our Alpha Omega Chapter.

Georgia Tech

Eugene M. Clary Beta Iota Educational Endowment

An educational endowment created by Eugene Clary, Georgia Tech ’29, to promote leadership and career development and encourage academic excellence in the Beta Iota chapter of Alpha Tau Omega at Georgia Tech.

Illinois

Matt Heldman Gamma Zeta Memorial Scholarship

One Scholarship annually awarded to a junior or senior undergraduate member of the Gamma Zeta chapter of ATO. Matt was a 3-year starter on the Fighting Illini basketball team. He is most remembered for his competitive spirit, drive to succeed, and kind heart. His outstanding character, positive mental attitude, discipline, and respect for others epitomize the values sought and taught by Alpha Tau Omega.

Frederick C. Philbrick Memorial Scholarship

This award was made possible by a bequest from Mrs. Edna Betts Philbrick in memory of her husband, Frederick C. Philbrick, Illinois ’11. Scholarships are awarded based on academic performance, community and campus activities and leadership as well as Gamma Zeta activities and leadership.

Robert J. Simonds (2^nd Century Fund) Scholarship

Must be an initiated member of ATO in good standing and a full time student at the University of Illinois; carry a grade point average above the all-men’s average at the University of Illinois, leadership in the community, on campus and in the chapter. The Gamma Zeta Board of Trustees will forward recipient recommendations to the Foundation.

Richard V. Clausing Scholarship

David S. Timson Memorial Scholarship

J. D. Sinnock Graduate Scholarship

This award memorializes John David Sinnock, Illinois ’83, who in his twenty-four years of life made a profound impact not only on his brothers and chapter at Gamma Zeta but served as a positive role model with everyone he came into contact with. Applicants must be a graduating senior member of the Gamma Zeta Chapter who will be attending graduate school within the next six months.

Iowa State

Gene Ehlert – William J. Burke, Jr. Scholarship

The Scholarship honors honoring Gene W. Ehlert ’59 and William J. Burke, Jr. ’74 for their extraordinary commitment to the Iowa Gamma Upsilon chapter of Alpha Tau Omega at Iowa State University. To qualify for Scholarships, individuals must live in the chapter house (if accommodation is available); be in good standing with the fraternity and University; and demonstrate leadership, Scholarship and good citizenship.

William H. Gardiner Gamma Upsilon Educational

The Gardiner Scholarships were established by Brother Gardiner to promote good citizenship, leadership and Scholarship in the Iowa Gamma Upsilon chapter of Alpha Tau Omega at Iowa State University.

Dale K. & Verlene Vaughn Weber Gamma Upsilon Scholarship

The Weber Scholarships were established by Brother Weber to provide financial assistance to students in the Iowa Gamma Upsilon chapter of Alpha Tau Omega at Iowa State University. Primary consideration shall be given to individuals with demonstrated financial need, who also display leadership and good citizenship.

Kansas State

William Lloyd Muir II and John Thomas Muir Memorial Award Grant-In-Aid Scholarship Program

L. Allyn Laybourn Scholastic Excellence Award

Named after L. Allyn Laybourn, Delta Theta ’21, and given by the Foundation upon recommendation of the Endowment Fund, to four members or pledges in good standing living in the Chapter House with the highest grade point averages for the previous school year.

Lehigh

Lee G. Barthold Memorial Scholarship

Scholarships given to the highest and most improved GPAs for sophomores and juniors.

Kritter Scholarship

This Scholarship was funded by a bequest from Julius Kritter, Maine-Orono ’13, to assist undergraduates at Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine-Orono. The Scholarship was created to provide one or more undergraduate ATOs who are full-time students at the time of the receipt of the award with financial assistance for their education.

Scholarship was named after George A. Ross, Purdue ’14, to award the top sophomore for academic achievement. A plaque honoring this award hangs in the Gamma Omicron chapter house.

Jeffrey Scott Hamilton Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship, dedicated to the memory of Jeffrey Scott Hamilton, South Carolina ’92., was created to honor his commitment to friendships that he made with people from all walks of life. It is being given to encourage and recognize not only academic achievement, but those who exemplify the friendship that was the basis envisioned when ATO was founded.

Tennessee

Brad Whittington Memorial Scholarship

Brad Whittington (’90) died suddenly and far too young in 2007. He was an active member of Pi Chapter during his time at UT, serving as Worthy Scribe and Pledge Trainer, as well as volunteering his time for virtually any committee, event, or philanthropic cause the chapter needed. In addition, he was there for any of his brothers at a moment’s notice. He genuinely wanted to help his brothers and was happy to do it whenever he could. In short, he was an ATO in the truest sense of the word.

This scholarship will be given annually to a current Pi Chapter member who embodies those traits that Brad had in abundance – leadership, integrity, commitment, and love of all things UT and ATO.

Texas – Arlington

Tuyet Luu Sweetheart Scholarship

The Tuyet Luu Sweetheart Scholarship was created with admiration of the chapter’s ability to recruit and produce strong leaders. In thus, the scholarship will be used to recognize a brother who embodies the ideals of Alpha Tau Omega by presenting strong citizenship, academics and most importantly, strong leadership within the chapter as well as outside.

Texas Tech

Patrick Doherty Memorial Scholarship

Memorial scholarship established in the memory of Patrick Doherty, Texas Tech ’74. Brother Doherty was killed by an accidental gunshot wound in 1976. The Zeta Eta Board of Trustees will forward recipient recommendations to the Foundation.

Gilles, Jones & Woods

Scholarship named after Dr. Clifford Gilles, Lyle Jones and J. Michael Woods, men who gave much of their time to ATO. This Scholarship was created to assist deserving ATO undergraduates in continuing their education. It was established to recognize ATOs from USC and UCLA.
