Chapter Eternal: Dr. Karl T. Langacher, Mount Union ’29

Dr. Karl Thomas Langacher, Mount Union ’29, a respected physician of Mansfield, died Thursday, May 6, 2010 at age 99.

Dr. Langacher was born June 21, 1910, in Alliance, Ohio to William and Rose (Schlafli) Langacher. He graduated from Alliance High School in 1928 and from Mount Union College (Alliance, Ohio) with a Bachelor of Science Degree in 1932. He was a member of Alpha Tau Omega Fraternity. Dr. Langacher received his Medical Degree from Harvard Medical School in 1936. He joined the U.S. Army in 1942 as Captain and Chief Surgeon. Dr. Langacher served 41 months in Burma and India. In January of 1946 he received an Honorable Discharge from the Army, where he was a Captain with the 9th Service Command. He returned to Mansfield where he established his private practice and did general surgery at Mansfield General Hospital for over 40 years. Dr. Langacher was a member of the First Congregational Church, past President and honorary staff member of Mansfield General Hospital, the Board of Directors of Richland Bank, Our Club and a charter member of the 51 Club. He received the Paul Harris Fellowship Award from the Rotary Foundation of Rotary International. Dr. Langacher was a member of the Pillar Organization with United Appeal and was Emeritus Trustee of Mansfield General Hospital Foundation. He was an avid golfer and enjoyed playing at Westbrook Country Club.

He is survived by his two daughters, Mary and husband, James F. Robertson of Richmond, Indiana, and Carol “Buff” and husband, Clyde Crouch of Kingwood, Texas; Dr. Langacher will be lovingly remembered by his six grandchildren, Michael (Susan) Robertson of Pompano Beach, FL, Jill (Jeff) Hutcherson of Lexington, NC, Bonnie (Thomas) Harker of Morrison, CO, Jennifer (Kent) Lyons of College Station, TX, Edward (Kimberly) Crouch of Cary, NC and Karl (Carrie) Crouch of Crosby, TX; he was very proud of his eight great-grandchildren, Alyssa and Kyle Robertson, Caleb and Rebecca Hutcherson, Morgan and Carson Harker and Aidan and Abigail Lyons.

Dr. Langacher was preceded in death by his wife of 51 years, Helen Henry Langacher in December 1987; second wife, Mary Ellen Langacher in 2008; brother, William; and sister, Nell.
